Wong Kar-Wei Interview

I unfortunately had to skip my thesis class to attend tonight’s interview of Wong Kar-Wei. The Apple Store in Soho and IndieWire brought Wong Kar-Wei to speak about his new film, My Blueberry Nights as well as talk about his film-making process. The two movies I saw were In the Mood for Love and 2046. Both incredible masterpieces of cinema. I am so inspired to see such a visual storyteller talk about their creative process, especially since his new movie has such a diverse cast. Aside from the typical starring roles played by Jude Law and Natalie Portman, I was more interested in why cast the first time actress and jazz songwriter, Norah Jones (who I also adore for her music). The few clips shown tonight revealed that Norah was more then a singer but also a fantastic actress. I found out at that Wong Kar-Wei also casted Cat Power in a small role as well because he believed that the chemistry between Cat and Jude would mesh well. It is so inspiring to hear him speak about the background of his new film, but I felt his answers in the Q&A portion were purposely aloof. I had a sense he did not want to reveal in detail his creative process. I am looking forward in watching his new film released this coming Friday.
